Julian Rachlin debuts with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra
Conductor David Robertson has said that violinist Julian Rachlin “seems to actually speak via his instrument,” which is exactly what Rachlin did at his debut with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in January.
The evening’s program consisted largely of newer compositions, bridged by Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto featuring Rachlin’s soaring interpretation, “a perfect marriage of lyrical sensibilities…all delicately realized without any bravado.” The piece itself is a familiar one for loyal audiences, but Rachlin “played with an idiosyncratic style that created the illusion of improvising the music on the spot rather than playing a work written over 160 years ago.”
