Anne-Sophie Mutter returned to Tanglewood for the festival’s opening weekend in an epic celebration of the legacy composers  André Previn and John Williams.
On Saturday, July 6 she joined Maestro Andris Nelsons and the Boston Symphony Orchestra to celebrate the life and works of André Previn with his Violin Concerto “Anne-Sophie”. The composition, originally premiered and recorded with the BSO in 2003, was a most beautiful engagement present from the composer to the soloist.
As Anne-Sophie wrote in her letter to André “The theme of the third movement is a variation upon ‘Wenn ich ein Vöglein wär’ (‘If I were a bird’) – my favorite children’s song – which we now play in your memory…It is one of the most significant violin concertos of the last 100 years, and I am delighted we have been able to perform it all over the world.”
On Sunday, July 7 audiences witnessed ACROSS THE STARS: 14 world premieres of John Williams’ arrangements for virtuosic violin and orchestra that span Star Wars, Harry Potter, Dracula, Cinderella Liberty, and Memoires of Geisha. David Newman and Williams lead The Boston Pops in this extraordinary program, resulting in an unforgettable night of music.
