About
Mexico’s National Symphony Orchestra is the country’s most representative music ensemble. Its first antecedent is the Orquesta Sinfónica de México (Mexico’s Symphony Orchestra) founded in 1928 by Carlos Chávez. When the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Institute of Fine Arts) was created in 1947, the orchestra first became the Orquesta Sinfónica del Conservatorio Nacional de Música (Orchestra of the National Music Conservatoire) and finally, the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional. The orchestra has garnered many accolades, including a nomination for the Latin Grammy in 2002 for Best Classical Album and the Lunas del Auditorio Award . . . in 2004 for Best Classical Show.
Internationally acclaimed conductors have been Music Director of the orchestra, including José Pablo Moncayo, Luis Herrera de la Fuente, Eduardo Mata, Sergio Cárdenas, José Guadalupe Flores, Francisco Savín and Enrique Arturo Diemecke. Many legendary figures have been guest conductors of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional, such as Monteux, Bernstein, Stravinsky, Solti, Copland, Penderecki, Klemperer, Celibidache, Villa-Lobos and Dutoit. World renowned musicians have participated as soloists with the Mexico Symphony Orchestra such as Arthur Rubinstein, Yo-Yo Ma, Mstislav Rostropovich, Carlos Miguel Prieto, Jessye Norman, Frederica von Stade, Kiri Te Kanawa, Francisco Araiza, Plácido Domingo and Joshua Bell, among many others.
The orchestra is a frequent guest of Mexico’s annual festivals including: México en el Centro Histórico, Internacional Cervantino, Internacional de Música de Morelia. It was the ensemble chosen to usher in the new millennium in a massive concert held in Mexico City’s central square, the Zócalo, with world-famous Mexican tenor Ramón Vargas.
The Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional has received praise internationally, participating in important festivals and toured many countries, always with great success. Among its main endeavors is the dissemination of the Mexican and Latin American orchestral repertoire.
Under the baton of the orchestra is current Music Director, Maestro Carlos Miguel Prieto, who was appointed in 2007. The orchestra, alongside Maestro Prieto, embarked their 2008 European Tour. On this tour, the orchestra played fourteen concerts at some of Europe´s most prestigious halls and venues, including Düsseldorf’s Tonhalle, Leipzig’s Gewandhaus, Berlin’s Konzerthaus, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Paris’ Theatre du Châtelet, and Brussels’ Palais des Beaux Arts, being consistently acclaimed by demanding European audiences. In November of 2016, also under the baton of Maestro Carlos Miguel Prieto, the orchestra offered 10 concerts featuring Mexican and Latin American symphonic repertoire in renowned concert halls of Austria, Germany and Slovenia, which included Vienna´s Musikverein, Salzburg´s Grosses Festspielhaus, Cologne´s Kölner Philharmonie and Frankfurt Alte Oper.
